The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) notified Monroe County on Thursday that it plans to upgrade the Norfolk Southern railroad crossing at the intersection of Hwy. 41 South and Rumble Road in Smarr.
According to GDOT’s announcement letter, the proposed project will include the installation of a new warning device and automatic gate related advance warning signs on Rumble Road. In addition, the existing crossing surface will be removed, relocated and realigned with Rumble Road and pavement markings will be installed. The letter also stated that all work will be performed within the existing railroad and railroad right-of-way and the minor required right-of-way area for adjusting turning radii along Evans Road.
GDOT’s announcement said the project is in the “beginning stages” and gave no timeframe on when the proposed construction would begin. Further information will be provided to the public when it becomes available.
